Finding Latitude and Longitude

on Google Earth - Installed Version

 

  1. Scan Google Earth to determine where you think the picture was taken.

  2. Drop a pin on that location by clicking the Placemark button. (looks like a yellow thumbtack, top left of the screen.)

  3. A Window will appear. Move the placemark to the exact location you want it to be. Notice the Lat/Long Coordinates move as you adjust your Placemark.

  4. Copy and paste each of the Coordinates into the entry form on the "This Week's Pic" picture page, fill in the appropriate information, and submit your vote.

Finding Latitude and Longitude on Google Earth - Online Version

1. Click the "Add Placemark" button in the bottom left side of the screen

2. Select the exact location you think the Lego man is standing.

3. In the "Save to Project" pop up window, select "Edit Place"

4. In the sidebar window, scroll down to find Latitude and Longitude.

5. Copy and paste these coordinates into the proper fields beneath this week's image on the "This Week's Pic" page.

(Be mindful of +/- values. They matter a lot.)

Finding Latitude and Longitude

on Google Maps

 

  1. Scan Google Maps in satellite view (bottom left corner) to determine where you think the picture was taken.

  2. Drop a pin on that location by clicking the screen. A little yellow circle will appear where you clicked, and the latitude and longitude coordinates will appear in a little box at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Click on the Lat/Long coordinates in that box and a sidebar will appear on the left with the coordinates listed both as degrees/minutes seconds and as positive/negative values. Either format is acceptable.

  4. Copy and paste each of the Coordinates into the entry form on the "This Week's Pic" picture page, fill in the appropriate information, and submit your vote.

(but we still recommend using one of the above methods. They are far more effective.)
